WHEN AND WHERE WAS YOUR SON LAST SEEN?
My son William (Billy) Smolinski Jr., was last seen on August 24, 2004, at his home on Holly Street Waterbury, CT. His truck was parked at a suspicious spot in the drive way and his wallet and keys were found by one of the second set of detectives assigned to the case under the seat of his truck two weeks later.
WHAT WAS HE WEARING WHEN HE WENT MISSING?
No one seems to know what Billy was wearing when he went missing. We found a receipt in his trash for Burger King at 3:00 PM the day he went missing but because we had no assistance and guidance it wasn't until four days later my daughter and I actually went to Burger King to try and review the video surveillance. Sad to say it had already been erased. If we had known days earlier we would have seen what he was wearing and if there was anyone with him.
HAVE YOU RECEIVED ANY NEW LEADS?
The FBI is very active on the case and there are new leads which they decline to talk about. According to an interview on “The Early Show” some months back there are "persons of interest" All indications, Billy was murdered and now has a $60,000 reward. The state of Connecticut has offered $50,000 of the reward money.
CAN YOU PLEASE TELL ME ABOUT YOUR BUMPER STICKERS?
Until a few months ago there was a billboard on the highway which generated some tips but now that it has come down and bumper stickers are placed on cars for anyone who wants to help. It is like a traveling billboard, we get reports that some people approach the cars with the stickers and ask questions. This is an excellent way to spread the word. Someone knows something and we are going to continue until we get answers.
YOU SPEARHEADED A CONNECTICUT BILL TO CHANGE THE PROCEDURE FOR MISSING PERSON'S CASES?
I have to believe that good has to come out of a bad situation, with that being said, there is a new law that came into effect as of January 2008 on the way searches are conducted for missing persons by law enforcement. However, it has not been perfected. The law needs to be mandated throughout the state for it to work. We still have a way to go but we are on the right track, one step at a time. There is new technology available it needs to be implemented. We are not CSI like most people believe.
